From October 28 to November 1, the Magnum Photos agency and the American publishing house Aperture are offering an online sale of prints that play “hide and seek” with the world.
If photography has the power to reveal appearances of our world, we can hardly count on it to give us a complete view of it, because reality, as complex as it is fleeting, often escapes photographers. They have to be cunning to get through a path in the disorder of the world, playing hide and seek with him.
Trying to show what resists representation, bringing harmoniously into the image what can also obstruct the gaze, this is a major challenge for photographers. It is around this theme that the Magnum agency, with Aperture, has collected around 100 photographs for its new online print sale, which runs from October 28 to November 1.
Since the creation of the agency, its photographers have worked to show what is not accessible or visible: distant societies, closed circles of power, isolated places, everyday objects that we no longer even see.
In some cases, it was the photographs themselves that were hidden, forgotten in archives, or abandoned in favor of other shots; other images approach the theme in a more literal way: Susan's Masked Man Meiselas in Nicaragua or the anonymous protester of Don McCullin.
